A small, chatty language school in Turku
Puhekupla is Finnish for speech bubble, the little cloud of words above a cartoon character’s head. We named the school after it because every lesson here is about getting words out of your head and into the room.
Why Puhekupla exists
Turku is full of people who live between languages: researchers and nurses who moved here for work, families who speak Swedish at home and Finnish at school, and Finns who write English all day. Many of them tell us the same story. They studied a language for years and still froze when it was time to speak.
So we built a school around speaking. Groups stay small, lessons start with conversation instead of ending with it, and every course is tied to real situations in Turku, from the market square to the job interview.

How we teach
Four habits you will notice from the first lesson, whichever language you learn.
- 1
Speak from day one
Every lesson has more talking time than listening time. Even A1 students hold a short conversation in their very first class.
- 2
Small groups
Up to ten students per group, so everyone gets the teacher’s attention and nobody can hide at the back.
- 3
Mistakes are welcome
We correct gently and often. A good mistake is proof that you are trying something new.
- 4
Real life, real Turku
Role plays at the health centre, the landlord’s office and the coffee break, with the words people actually use.
About the YKI test
Many of our Finnish students need the National Certificates of Language Proficiency (YKI) for work or citizenship. Our B1 courses and the online YKI group prepare you for the intermediate-level test with timed practice and feedback on your writing and speaking.
Puhekupla prepares students for the YKI test but is not a test centre. You register for the test itself through the official YKI registration.
Two languages, one city
Turku, or Åbo in Swedish, is officially bilingual, and you will see both languages on every street sign. That is why Swedish has its own place on our timetable, next to Finnish and English, and why several of our teachers switch between all three without blinking.
